Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Foundation (SSTF)
What will you do during your internship with us?
Help the SSTF in greening the Seychelles tourism industry! Hotels, guesthouses and incoming agencies are one of our most important target groups! The Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label is an internationally recognized sustainable tourism management and certification programme designed specifically for use in Seychelles. We want to assess the reasons for the low numbers of SSTL certified accommodations in Seychelles and how we can help them to get certified and thereby improving their environmental and social performance. As part of your internship you will be helping us to conduct a survey among the members of the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association (SHTA).
Are any specific skills or requirements necessary?
We would like an intern who is:
Interested in sustainable tourism
Ideally has a first experience or understanding of tourism in Seychelles
Independent as you will need to travel around Mahe, Praslin and La Digue for the interviews with a colleague but potentially alone, once you´re experienced
Outgoing and confident, as you will be assigned to conduct interviews with managers of hotels, guesthouses etc
Interested in sustainable tourism

SEYCHELLES AIR FORCE
What do we do?
'The Seychelles Air Force is responsible for the patrolling and defending of the territorial water of the Seychelles Exclusive Economic Zone with maritime air assets, patrol aircraft and is able to air response to any threats within our EEZ. It also coordinates Search and Rescue (SAR) with other local agencies in the country. All operational readiness, welfare and maintenance of high discipline, morale and safety of all the officers and airmen are under the control of the Commanding Officer.
What will you do during your internship with us?
As an intern, you will :
- Receive induction training
- Assist pilots in flight planning
- Act as observers and surveillance personnel on air patrols
- Work with the Imagery cell to learn and understand how to analyze images from reconnaissance flights

Blue Economy Research Institute (University of Seychelles)
Mission
To create an active, autonomous regional knowledge and research network within the Blue Economy sector that facilitates the development of partnerships and research, advances sustainability initiatives, and identifies and coordinates synergies between local and international research partners, with a focus on direct and indirect research.
What do we do?
In March 2015 the University of Seychelles established the Blue Economy Research Institute (BERI). The institute was developed to support research in the area of environmental science, specifically the Blue Economy. The Blue Economy concept is currently a national priority with a great deal of international interest. This is a concept that focuses on the utilisation of coastal and ocean resources and services in an innovative and sustainable way and for the benefit of all. Key to this concept is maintaining (or improving) the integrity of these ecosystems. Development in this area needs to be managed through informed decision making, policy development and management plans that support healthy ecosystems to continue providing for future generations. The concept is of particular importance for an island nation such as Seychelles where we live close to nature and in ecosystems that are complex and interlinked.
Having been recently formed, BERI is currently at an interesting ‘building’ stage. Some of the activities being undertaken include:

- Development of marketing materials
- Development of business plans
- Grant applications
- Identification of potential projects for local development
- Working on a project to develop a regional environmental research network
- building strategies for community science projects and research engagement (communicating science/findings to decision makers and local and international community)
- Marine education
What will you do during your internship with us?
As a newly founded establishment, BERI is giving interns the opportunity to mould the institute. Interns will be able to have a ‘front seat’ in shaping the institute and transforming it into how they perceive institutes of the future should operate.

- Creative interns can design marketing materials, formulate marketing strategies and pioneer methods of communicating science effectively (newsletters etc…)

- Interns with strong networking and interpersonal skills can work on developing a regional network of researchers (Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros, Madagascar)
- For interns who wish to pursue a more field based experience they can work on a mangrove restoration project relating to Ecosystem-based Adaptation
- Interns can also work with local stakeholders to identify projects that will build local capacity in the Blue Economy and in industry specific activities e.g. ports, shipping, natural resource accounting, fisheries, aquaculture, renewable energy, bioprospecting, ecotourism, technology and innovation, governance, surveillance and monitoring, community engagement, social development, wastewater and pollution, protecting natural resources, climate change resilience, ecosystem-based adaptation, sustainable development etc.
- Interns can also assist the University Centre for Environmental Education in developing marine environmental education activities and strategies and career development programmes.

What do we do?
The Seychelles Bureau of Standards (SBS) is the National Standards Body (NSB) of Seychelles established under the SBS Act 1987. This Act was subsequently repealed and replaced by SBS Act 2014 to make better provision for the development, promotion and maintenance of standardisation and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
The bureau is a governmental regulatory body and is governed by a Board of Directors. The line Ministry is the Ministry of Investment, Entrepreneurial Development and Business Innovation. (MIEDBI) .

The Biochemical Testing Services division at SBS has four testing laboratories which tests food including fish and fish products, water including drinking water, bottled water, swimming pool water, borehole water and waste water, fish oil, fish meal, animal feed, alcoholic beverages, surface and hand swabs, plastic bags, paints, soaps, detergents etc...SBS laboratories are the national reference laboratory and also the designated Official Testing Laboratory for the Competent Authority (Fish Inspection and Quality Control Unit) for the testing of fish and fish products which are exported to Europe.
As an intern you will be allocated in any two of the three following laboratories :
Your roles and responsibilities will include:

By the end of the internship you will have a comprehensive understanding of the full technical operations and general overview of the Shipping Arm of SEYPEC.

- Oversee the profitable and efficient contractual performance management for the Seychelles tankers.
- Monitor markets and advise top management on commercial and financial trends and strategies
- Commercial and operational management and technical support for the Seychelles Paradise
- Administer the Crewing process and manage training for Seychellois crew
By the end of the internship you will have a comprehensive understanding of the full technical operations and general overview of the Shipping Arm of SEYPEC.
As an intern, you will :
- Have first hand exposure to daily office management
- Understand aspects of the owners' office roles and functionalities
- understand the international commercial tanker shipping industry, technical ship management and crewing.
- Updating of crew timeline and training plans
- Tanker management and performance monitoring
- Interact with SEYPEC's subsidiary agents such as Seychelles Ports Authority, Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration etc..

What do we do?
The Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration (SMSA) portfolio includes:
- being the custodian and responsible for the implementation of all the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) conventions and instruments that Seychelles has signed/ratified.
- responsible for amending and coming out with new maritime laws and legislation for the maritime section
- carrying out surveys and inspections of ships registered under Seychelles flag
- Registration of ships and seafarers
- Responsible for port state control of ships calling to Port Victoria
- Responsible for the operation of Navtex station and decimation of safety messages for all ships plying Seychelles waters and beyond
- Responsible for conducting Oral Examination of seafarers
