Wednesday 13th December 2017, it was unforgettable day that is for me of course. I woke with great excitement to remember that there was a cruise ship coming to port that day, I was very excited because I’ve never seen one before. But before I was able to board the ship, Mr Vincent Didon took my intern buddy, the two intern girls at SMSA and I for a tour on the port and some other facilities that SPA get in contact with. Our first stop was in the SPA itself where the cargo is located after taking it from the ship, we had a chance to see the cargo crane in action and where we also learned that Seychelles was the first country to use the fish loaders after 2008 but before that it was loaded by hand which took days to fill a cargo completely but now with the machine it fills 1-2 per days, after SPA we move around place to place seeing many interesting things. What actually impressed me was at the SFA, where I got the chance to see how they process fish. This young man here was checking the temperature of the fish before cutting a piece of it and sending it to IOT with the temperature. The fish was very cold so he has to use a saw and a metal chisel and also a hammer to hit the chisel with, I could see that it was not easy to cut the fish as it was from a frozen zone with the temperature -35°C to -60°C. There were two men down there tying the fish with a rope to bring it up and making sure the fish aren’t sticking together because once it does it could be difficult to remove it. Once the fish are up it goes through a machine to transport it outside (center of the boat) but before that the ropes have to be cut and now only can it be transported outside, on the way to the centre of the boat one man has to stand by making sure that there is no fish that gets stuck on the way to the centre. Once the fish are outside now the process can be made to turn it into tuna that we buy in the shop. SFA was our last stop. By the time we were done it was almost noon so we went back to SPA to wait until noon to have lunch on the cruise ship Costa Neo Riviera. After lunch we went on a little tour around the ship and may I say I was really fascinated by the design. Until next time, Chamina
