At the break of dawn I woke up, bright and early to get ready to head to the International Airport of Seychelles to catch a plane which brought me here to Mauritius (where I’m actually writing). I left for the dodo bird land with SYAH-Seychelles to learn about the different organisations and institutions that are directly connected to the blue economy/ocean based economy. At 7:30am all the interns were gathered at the airport and you could see how excited they were to be visiting our neighbour, to discover and compare their blue economy concept with Seychelles. I’m very sure that it will be an eye opening experience for us all. At the airport we were met by our chaperones Kalsey Belle, Alvin Laurence and Shantana Barbe who is also an intern. In total there are 16 of us including the interns and we all flew to Mauritius on our national airline Air Seychelles, who played a major role to make the trip possible by giving SYAH-Seychelles a special discount. Quarter past nine we began to board the plane. The journey began and we took off at about a speed of 170mph. Of course the climbing of the aircraft to its cruising altitude of 34,000ft was the best part. While taking off I took the opportunity to observe our coastlines to see how developed they really are, to my surprise the Mauritian coastlines are more developed than the Seychelles’. This shows that the Seychellois government is trying their best to preserve our pristine shores. As we began our descent into Mauritius we had a bird’s eye view of part of the southern of the island and one could see how their coastal developments are. This is quite unfortunate as being a Small Island Developing State like Seychelles; one should take steps to sustainably develop the coastal areas. This is because the coastal areas possess coral reefs and marine life which is a source of food for small islands. If one over develops their coast what will they get food to eat? In Mauritius we are currently staying at the Paradis de Iles in Quatre Bornes, which is in the middle of the island and this allows us to get to the different places we are expected to visit quite fast. The places that all the lucky interns will get the chance to visit are;
