A Seychelles Free from Plastic Bags
THE JOURNEY

A Seychelles Free from Plastic Bags was a campaign launched by the SIDS Youth AIMS Hub - Seychelles in 2015 on the 3rd July to commemorate International Day free from plastic bags but here is the whole journey from a simple idea to fruition.

This page started in April 2015 by the SIDS Youth AIMS Hub Seychelles as they prepared for their campaign: A Seychelles Free From Plastic Bags. The name changed late 2015 to A Seychelles Free from Plastic Bags by 2016 after it was announced, late 2015, by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change that there would be a ban on plastic bags. We chose a multi-prong approach: education (online and offline), action-oriented and policy and research. #SayYesToThePlasticBan

During the length of the campaign there were 12 clean ups over 12 months. From mobilising smaller groups to large crowds of people to take action against waste. #SayYesToTheBan
Partnerships were key - ICS used to send us photos of our outer islands. Below is Alphonse! The pristine beach you thought was there! #SayYEsToThePlasitcBan

Perhaps it seemed like a bunch of kids just having a debate to you, but to us, we had our strategy to bring about change at policy and legal level and to change the behaviour of the individual. #ASeychellesFreeFromPlasticBags

A Seychelles free from Plastic Bags – can life be without plastic
Youth on La Digue were engaged and here they are showing their support for international no plastic bag day!
We collected data on the views of Seychellois on a ban on plastic bags. In our survey of 100 people on Mahe 89 people have stated they would be happy or would not mind if there was a plastic bag ban introduced in the Seychelles. 6 people said they would be angry for the following reason:
1. Unhappy because he is used to plastic bags #habit
2. They are other types of pollution so why ban plastic bags?
3. A ban will not be fair because we are used to it.
4. Very used to plastic bags and it is not her who is littering so why should she be punished for other people littering.

With the assistance of local partners we had alternatives for different age groups and for different uses available.
On the 24th September 2015, it was announced that the ban was on its way!

The initiative was applauded regionally. A new project will be announced following this conference. #SayYesToPlasticBan

We saw the collaboration with the inmates at the Seychelles prison to produce alternatives. #SayYesToPlasticBan The Seychelles Prison - SYAH collaboration saw the production of alternatives by inmates showing their care for their external environment. These were sold and reinvested into the campaign.
