The Blue Economy
What is the Blue Economy?
The Blue Economy is basically the sustainable use of the ocean.
It is a developing world initiative pioneered by Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The aim is to change the mind-set and behaviour of using the ocean as a means of free resource extraction and waste dumping. It endorses the importance of the ocean towards a country’s prosperity and encourages a sustainable development framework of conducting ocean-based economic activity that is consistent with the long-term capacity of marine ecosystems. To maintain resilient and healthy oceans across the world, it is imperative that the way we use the ocean in sectors such as fishing, tourism, transport and extractive activities are sustainable. The Blue Economy incorporates ocean values and services into economic modelling and decision-making processes.
