A new week has begun and I am now afloat as an intern at the Seychelles Coast Guard. Apart from the legal formalities done at the gate we were received by many commissioned officers and we proceeded to a small briefing whereby we were introduced to them and later on went on a small tour around the base and get to know the different departments as well as their functions. The first day went by quietly, but we were looking forward for the next.
Day two arrived and I was assigned to the communication operations department and two young soldiers Cpl. Cherry and L. Cpl. Bijoux enlightened me about the different operations that takes place behind this door. Via VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) the department oversees and monitor the different local fishing vessels in our waters, however, for international vessels such as long liners the AIS (Automatic Identification System) is used. These can help see if any vessels are roaming in our EEZ both legal and illegally. The Coastguard also receives important emails such as: distresses, or reports (mission report) from other units such as the Seychelles Air Force. They also conduct operator duties by receiving and making important phone calls. It is important to note that the Coastguard and the Airforce conducts joint operations such as search and rescue, anti-narcotics, as well as the well-known anti-piracy operations. This is not an easy task when it comes to protecting our blue economy. However, these men and women accepted the challenge. So don’t you want to be part of these operation? I wish I could say more, but some information are classified. That’s all folks! Annia
