Love can be defined in so many ways; In Multiple languages and in an immense amount of ways. There are no holds that love doesn’t have on us. If you write down a social equation there is no answer that won’t have love as a common denominator. Humans we are a dominant species. We run the food chain; from ancient civilisation to the modern world. Humans always come out on top. Technological advances, Fashionable choices, food art and the magnificent wonders of the industrial revolution. We humans may complain about sharks and any other species threatening our population but at the back of our heads we know that these creatures are inferior and we are the king of the food chain. We are sitting on top of our beautifully carved throne made out of the best wood in the world and we have our gold crown on our heads mined by the hardest working individuals on the planet and we are scrolling on the newest tablet developed by the most successful industries in the world.
We wake up every morning. We have a neat morning routine and we have the best of what we can afford. We go to sleep thinking about what may or might not benefit us tomorrow or in the near future. We look around our room and we think to ourselves “what if I had more “ , “what if I could get more money by selling furniture” or “what if I could make more money by meeting human needs by going all out, exploit as much resources to make the best product”. This is typically us; Humans. Ghandi was right when he said “the earth provides enough to satisfy men’s need, However not enough for men’s greed.” We are living in a century of Want however not one of need. We no longer need something; we want it because we already have enough for our needs. We go as far as to change the want to need. We tell ourselves that we don’t want the new model of the washing machine, we need a new model of that washing machine because it will benefit us in the long term; it takes more loads. We no longer find Cars as necessity, however a luxury. These luxuries are not wrong, until… The reality is: we are sitting on that throne with the beautiful sceptre and the carefully crafted crown but we are no longer using, we are destroying everything; from cutting down trees to pushing the earth to its limit by mining for the biggest pieces of diamonds possible. We are ungrateful little creatures and we don’t know it, or we do but we are just ignoring its pleas; Climate change and its effect, global warming and its heat. …Until it wasn’t enough for us. We had to create new compounds and find ‘easier’ ways to kill the creatures providing a healthy and balanced ecosystem. We found easier ways to suffocate this planet before its time. I am talking about Plastic bags. Love can take different forms, and in this case love took the form of plastic bags. We no longer want to part from it. We ignore the death of prehistoric and valuable creatures such as the turtles. We deny the shorter life span that the effects of plastic have on our lives. Just because the advert looked enticing we fall in love with any plastic product and once our want for such a product ends we decide that we want something else, something ‘easier’ because this is the human race; Always feeling the need to want more and the need to be the dominant species. The thing about dominant species is that it reigns until another more prominent species knocks them off their throne. However no one is knocking us off our throne but us. Overheating has become our new normal, suffocating and toxins our new medicine. I think it’s time we sit down in front of the plastic bags and say “it’s not you, it’s me...I’m to blame, I’m sorry I dragged you into this mess, but we need to break up” By Joshua Sofola
